Introduction
Isleworth Cemetery was opened in 1880. One memorial is to the Pears family who made soap in Isleworth from 1862 to 1962. The memorial records the death of Tom pears who in 1912 planned a trip with his wife Edith. They boarded the Titanic in Southampton as first class passengers. Sadly Tom never survived although Edith was rescued in lifeboat number 8.
West Middlesex Hospital used to be Brentford Union Workhouse built in 1837-38. It was also a military hospital during the 1st World War. Records suggest that 4989 wounded soldiers were treated there with only 1 death…. which does not explain why there are 28 dead from the 1st World War buried in Isleworth Cemetery directly behind the hospital.
Witnesses have reported strange lights and a shadow like figure roaming the cemetery after dark. The figure has been seen wandering between the graves and often sitting on a bench situated in the heart of the memorial grounds.
Twinkling lights, someone whispering, and even a lit bonfire seen blazing have been reported although no one was there.

Vigil 1 Front and Left side of Cemetery
Walking along the front path Steen picked up on two males here, all team feel fine. Mary-Lou had two names given to her one a Mary Thistle and two a John Albert Steed. Val called for spirit to come forward and communicate with us, but nothing was seen or heard. We found many orbs were being captured on the digital cameras. Val calls to spirit no response. Steen felt that a murder had taken place, beaten to death, it was a male spirit. Ken said he had the feeling that we were being followed. Steen has a pain in the back of his neck and Val has lower back pains. Val throws a stone and asks spirit to throw it back but no response.
Ken said we were definitely being followed as he saw a shadow between the grave stones; he went to look where they were seen but nothing was there. Steen feels a lot of energy building up and feels something is going to happen. Ken is feeling hot. Sound is heard by all toward the chapel. Again Val calls out no response and throws another stone but it was not returned. Ken again insists someone is watching and following us. At the end of the path we turned right toward the chapel. All team still feel calm. Steen suddenly sees leaves raise up at the foot of a gravestone in his torchlight and went closer to look there was no explanation for this to happen. Steen asks spirit to move the leaves again but there was no response to this. Steen then sees someone next to Mary-Lou and went to see her. Immediately Steen took a photograph of Mary-Lou and a large orb was captured next to her on the digital camera. Val felt as though there was a finger down the collar of her coat and Steen standing next to Val was touched on his bottom. He thought it may be a child touching him.
Steen and Val now feel there is someone with them. Mary-Lou, Mandy and Ken all feel fine. Val has gone usually hot and feels like her chest has gone tight. Steen calls to spirit to affect someone else not just Val. Mandy smells cooking like an old fashioned house with pastry smells like apple pies and it is quite strong. All of a sudden it is gone then returns again after a few minutes. Val’s second lot of new batteries die. Ken feels a significant drop in temperature in one place behind the chapel, we left the area and it became warm only to drop again when we returned.
We held a séance in this particular place forming a circle and holding hands. Steen called for spirit to join us Val’s back is now really painful.
Vigil 2 Rear of Cemetery and Circle
Val is picking up on a fire here; someone has lost their life possibly a fireman, not sure if it’s the first or second world war. Val senses an old fire engine with fireman standing on the top and back of it. Val calls to spirit to come forward but there is no response. All team feel ok. Steen has the vision of a nun dressed in a light blue habit kneeling down praying, her name is Sister Mary then says Sister Mary-Anne. The convent Mary-Anne associated with is called Howells Chapel. Val is given the name of the fireman as a Thomas Robertson or Roberts. Steen sees a beam of light in the trees (not from our torches). Ken says he has a pain in his neck just as Steen thought the pain in his neck had eased off. We decided to hold a séance with Steen leading it. The team are feeling fine. Joining hands we formed a circle Val and Steen calling out. Kens neck is now getting really bad. Steen whistles and Val asks for spirit to copy him no response. Val has a voice saying to her “Jacks here”. Steen asks spirit to throw a stone again no response. Mandy feels there are people around us watching, Steen feels like there are two ice cold hands on his shoulders while Val is very hot. (Most unusual for her) and still has bad back pains. Ken sees a shadow from around a tree and went to look. Val’s photo has a large orb exactly by the tree. Ken finds nothing by or around the tree. Ken said the person was peering round the tree straight at us.
Vigil 3 Right of Cemetery and Circle
Mandy felt disorientated walking down the path and thought she had been here before. Val calls to spirits to come closer and communicate with us. Val is thinking of plague victims buried around this part of the cemetery. Val again calls for spirit to communicate with us but there is no response. Kens legs feel very very heavy; we continue to walk along the pathway. Steen whistles and asks for a return whistle, nothing is heard.
Mandy says she feels calm not scared like she imagined, she could sit alone here, but still feels like she is being watched as do all of us. Many orbs appear on the digital cameras but we have put this down to an early morning mist that seemed to be coming down now. At the rear of the Cemetery it is bordered by a high fence and in front of it a gravel path. Mandy sees someone sitting with legs crossed by a grave, on investigation no one is there.
All the team suddenly hear gravel shuffling. Ken and Steen go to the fence where the sound is coming from; still the sound of gravel moving is heard by us all. Ken and Steen look over the fence, no one is there it is all derelict. Again we all hear sounds of the gravel on the path being disturbed.
Then we all hear sounds like workman on a building site coming from over the fence, again Steen and Ken have a look but there is nothing there to suggest any noises. The sounds continue all the time we are in this area with no explanation whatsoever. Ken calls out to anyone that may be there spirit or living but there is no response at all. The sounds of the gravel moving seemed to be coming from all different directions along the gravel path as though spirit was playing with us.
When we moved from this area the sounds of the gravel stopped.
Steen saw a light across the trees and Val starts to shiver, although she does not feel cold. Mary-Lou walks around many gravestones and at one particular place feels very saddened almost to the point of crying but cannot explain these feelings; she continues walking through the graves. On walking further along the path Mandy and Val hear gravel on a grave being moved as if someone was rubbing their hands across the top of the gravel. Val calls to spirit again and after a few moments the same sound is heard again. Val is doubled over with the pain in her back.
Ken now calls to spirit as he feels there is a presence still following us, but there is no response. Val picks up on a lot of people being killed and buried here, maybe through a war time bomb. Were they killed at the Middlesex Hospital?
Team 2
Jim Arnold (leading investigator)
Gary Hayes
Jo (guest)
Jennifer (guest)
Vigil 1 Right of Cemetery and Circle
Jim feels warmth in the air like someone’s breath; all form a circle to hold a séance, and Jim’s face becomes very warm. Jim calls for spirit to come forward to join with them. Jo hears a rustling noise coming from behind her; again Jim reaches out for spirit to join with them. Gary feels as though he cannot move his feet. All feeling fine.
Jim sees a light maybe another team but then rules this out as teams were not in the vicinity. Team move toward the chapel.
Vigil 2 Front and left of Cemetery
The new batteries in Jim’s camera die within a minute of starting vigil. The team hold an Ouija séance on a grave with Jim asking spirit to come forward and communicate the planchette moves to either X or 3. Asked spirit again, X or 3 and the planchette moved to NO. He asked if spirit minded him being on the grave the planchette moves to S. Jim asks for another letter No other communication.
Team continue walking around, Jim again asks for spirit to come forward, to affect one of the team no response. Everyone is feeling calm and relaxed. Jim feels as though it is getting darker. Team try another séance in the chapel with the Ouija no response, then holding hands in a circle and Jim calls for spirit. A sound is heard but then find it is a bat. Someone touches Jim’s ear and he smells tobacco. Jim again calls for spirit then Jim sees an orb go right across the team. Again Jim feels like his ear is touched and all hear a moaning sound. Jim has a bad headache suddenly come on. Jim has the name of John and his headache went as suddenly as it came when he left this area.
Vigil 3 Rear of Cemetery and Circle
Team walk around but nothing is seen or heard, Jim calls for spirit to communicate by any means, and there is no response to this. Team feel fine, Jim sees a flash of light but not from the other teams. No other occurrences on this vigil.
Team 3
Emma Macdonald (leading investigator)
Jim Patterson
Simon Patterson
Jacqi Ephgrave
Pat Randall
Vigil 1 Rear of Cemetery and Circle
Pat’s torch batteries die immediately on starting the walk along the path. Jacqi hears a sound and it seems re-occurring. Jacqi asks for spirit to come to the group, to communicate in whichever way that they can, she feels shivery. Emma now tries to communicate with spirit, she shuffles her feet and asks spirit to copy her, Jacqi sees a light upon the ground between the trees (no other team there) Simon calls for spirit, Jim and Emma smell tobacco it is quite a strong smell. Pat sees a whitish shadow further along the path. Emma is feeling very sick walking around the circle of graves. Again Emma tries to talk to spirit, so far no communication at all. Whispering sound is heard by all, Emma asks for spirit to talk louder to come closer and talk again. Jim and Jacqi scratch their noses at the same time, as though they were touched. The walkie talkie the team used sounded but no one touched it. Ken in team one picked up the signal and asked if everyone in team three were ok. Jacqi’s torch batteries now die, then her camera battery dies almost immediately, Emma asks if spirit can do anything else. Jacqi felt as though a needle has entered her right thigh and it was quite painful, and she can smell an earthy aroma, then her torch suddenly comes on again while standing in the circle. Emma complains she has a back ache; she then throws a stone and asks for spirit to throw it back. Team hear whispering from the nearby chapel, Simon hears a moan and groan from the same direction. No other occurrences on this vigil.
Vigil 2 Right of Cemetery
Pat calls for spirit to come forward, the leaves move on the trees although the night is still. She asks for spirit to come closer and sit next to Emma and touch her hat. Team walk around the whole area, Simon feels as though someone spat on him. Emma talks to spirit, everyone is feeling ok, and Emma still has a bad back. Jacqi feels uncomfortable at seeing the middle chapel and feels there is a shadow lurking there watching them. End of vigil two.
Vigil 3 Front and Left of Cemetery
Simon felt as though someone was by the path and Jacqui’s batteries again die, all hear chapel gates open then realize it is another team. Team feel quite comfortable walking around, Jacqi saw a thick white shadow pass across the path that is along the side of the road. Jacqi says her back is really painful. No other occurrences.
All Teams
Vigil 4 The Chapels
The chapel is divided into three sections the middle is an arch with a chapel going off to the right and another to the left.
All three teams enter the middle section we feel it is very eerie here but then make our entry into the left chapel. The pews are covered in dust and cobwebs. It smells like a typical church. We heard the sound of piano keys playing. All of us form a circle to hold a séance. Val calls to spirit to come forward, Gary hears a sigh, Val feels warm air on her hand. Steen whistles and asks for a response a small sound is heard although not a whistle. Ken feels someone is standing between Simon and himself.
Mandy and Val sit on the ground in the middle of the circle and hold hands with Jim conducting the Séance. Respecting all beliefs he asks for spirit to join us. Val feels like there is heat coming up from the ground and feels a breeze across her hand. Jim whistles and shuffles his feet and feels cold but there is no response to copy him Val senses someone standing beside her, a male and she feels sick. Mandy is feeling quite cold. Gary has pains in his back, and Jacqi feels so sick she is removed from the area. Val feels the presence of an old ginger cat and describes the cat as Garfield. Steen feels the presence of a male standing beside him and also felt the presence of a cat. All hear the sound of church bells although it is three o clock in the morning.
The séance ends and the team move across the archway to the right side chapel.
Val and Jim take turns in calling out for spirit all members feel ok in this chapel. A few sounds were heard but we thought it was probably the bats that were above us. No other occurrences were found in this area.
On returning to the hub reflecting on the nights vigils we thought it strange that four members had the same problem with their backs hurting throughout the night. Was there some reason unknown for this to happen?
