Introduction
Two members of MPI have the charity Help for Heroes very close to their hearts; one member’s brother-in-law was severely injured losing both legs and an arm another member’s son is serving in Afghanistan. MPI set to and decided to raise money for these brave men and women. We needed to find a venue to hold a sponsored charity investigation and never in our wildest dreams did we know what was to unfold
Ken and Val paid a visit to Beaulieu Palace and spoke to Margaret Rowles explaining what MPI were intending to do and could they help us in any way. Within a couple of days MPI were invited by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu to hold an investigation at the Abbey completely free of charge. MPI are overwhelmed by his generosity.
MPI sincerely thank Lord Montagu of Beaulieu for allowing MPI to investigate the Abbey of Beaulieu free of any charge.
Our grateful thanks to Margaret Rowles for her involvement and for making our visit possible.
Our two volunteer guides Sarah and Lyndsey for their enthusiasm and kindness and for staying with us all night, well done.
To all the members of the public that have supported us and donated money to Help for Heroes Charity we say a big thank you
Beaulieu Abbey History
Popularly known as the ancestral home of Lord Montagu, and the place where the National Motor Museum can be visited, Beaulieu was once the site of a large Cistercian monastery. Situated in the heart of the beautiful New Forest, Beaulieu Abbey was founded in 1204 on land gifted to the monks by King John. It took some 42 years to complete the abbey church, one of the largest Cistercian churches in England. With an overall length of 336ft (102m), some 186ft (56.4m) wide across the transepts, and containing an apsidal chancel surrounded by a ring of ten chapels, it must have been a most glorious sight. Sadly, the only evidence remaining of that splendid structure are the south aisle wall of the nave and one wall of the south transept.
In the early part of the 14th century the monastic complex, built on the standard Cistercian plan, was finished with the addition of the Great Gatehouse. Unlike the abbey church and the cloistral buildings, which were virtually demolished at the Dissolution in 1538, this imposing gatehouse, together with many of the domestic ranges were later converted and re-used.
Consequently, there are some fine examples of the original medieval architecture to be found in the grounds of Beaulieu Abbey. The triple arches, once forming the entrance from the cloister to the Chapter House, have been restored, the monks' dining room was transformed into the parish church after the Dissolution, and other buildings along the western range are now used to provide visitors with refreshments. A rare survival at Beaulieu Abbey is that of the lay brothers living quarters. This 'Domus' was positioned on the western side of the cloisters to keep the working monks separate from the dedicated choir monks. Presently just half its original size, the Domus has been extensively restored and now houses the Beaulieu Abbey Exhibition.
Hardly recognizable now, the great gatehouse was restored, extended, and rebuilt over three centuries to become the grand mansion known as Palace House, and the seat of the Montagu family. Despite the many alterations, there are still quite a few reminders inside the house of its monastic beginnings, and really has to be included as part of the exploration of Beaulieu Abbey.
The Evening began with MPI travelling to Beaulieu in the mini bus that was sponsored by Servoca Secure Solutions, all decorated with red white and blue ribbons, balloons and Help for Heroes posters. On our arrival we were warmly greeted by Sarah and Lyndsey our guides for the night.
We made our way to the hub in the lower Domus where Ken, Gary and Steen set up all our camera’s that were connected to monitors and DVD.
Sarah and Lyndsey then escorted us around Beaulieu Abbey giving us only the history of the Abbey and nothing more.

Vigil 1 the Domus
EMF Reading 0 Temperature reading 18.0 degrees all around
We approached the stage and Mark sensed a man, short in stature, a man in his eighties, this man did not like us in here. We decided to hold glass divination on the stage with Mark calling for spirit to come forward and communicate with us. Mark asked spirit his name, no response, then Mark asked if he did the work of God and the glass moved to yes, then asked for sprits age, glass moved to 49, Mark asked for the glass to be moved if this was correct, and no movement.
Val and Pat suddenly get a headache.
Adrian asked spirit questions then Mark but there was no response to either. All team feel calm.
Mark then has numbness to the right side of his face, and he asks spirit to communicate with him the glass moved again.
Q Questions A Answer.
Q 1st letter of your name
A M
Q Are you a lay brother
A No
Q Is there anyone else with you
A No
Marks ribs start to ache
Q Are you affecting Mark?
A UGD
No further communication came through so the séance was closed.
Mark said there were at least six monks here and they were curious as to what we were doing. Val asked for spirits to chant to us a sound was heard, a dragging sound. We sat round the table again with the tips of our fingers on the edge. All hear a sound behind Val, Pat calls for spirit to come forward. Again we tried to communicate through glass divination and Mark asked for the name of the spirit to be spelt out the letter came through as
BRIOTHMBLACLN
No other communication came through so closed the séance.
Mark felt as though spirit was telling him “it’s not sacred anymore” then Mark felt there had been a suicide in here perhaps a hanging from the beams or maybe an accident. Adrian senses movement to his right and behind Val
No other occurrences.
Vigil 2 Abbey Ruins
EMF Reading 0 Temperature Reading 10-14 degrees.
We started to walk in the ruins along the pathway leading to the Abbey alter. Mark senses multiple monks here. As we stood by the alter cross Mark heard whispering. Behind the cross Adrian hears something being thrown so we walked around trying to find anything that could have been thrown or dropped from the trees nothing was found, Val hears a growl and then hears chanting. Adrian sees a man dressed in white among the trees but we are alone. Pat and Val both hear chanting. Walking toward the infirmary area suddenly Gary feels ill he could not stand, he sat down with his head in his hands as soon as we left this area he was fine. Everyone was feeling dizzy along the pathway and as we walked it was as though we were on a ship. In the cloister area Val saw someone walk across the grass. She asked Pat which one of the team walked across then noticed the team was altogether. The man Val saw came from one corner across the grass and disappeared into the cloister wall. As we got to the abbey church Mark, Adrian and Gary looked in the glass doors and could all see a figure holding candles only to be told later there was no statue in there close enough to be seen from the doors.
Vigil 3 Lower Domus
EMF Reading 0 Temperature Reading 13 degrees
As we sat in the room at the far end of the domus Mark began to feel claustaphobic and sick, he felt there were a lot of spirits in here, Val asks for spirit to come forward and talk to us. She asked spirit to knock or to make a sound but there was no response. Val could sense a red sash around a white gown. We then tried to communicate through glass divination and straight away the glass started to move Pat was asking questions to spirit
Team 2
Vigil 1 Lower Domus
EMF Reading 0 Temperature Reading 12.0 degrees
We made our way to the lower domus Jacqi calls for spirit to come and communicate but there was no response. Jim then asks for spirit to make a sound and all team hear a bang but we are not sure if it was from a spirit or from another team. We then held glass divination séance and on asking questions the glass started to move.
Q What year were you born?
A 1290
Q Did you die here?
A No
Q Did you work here?
A Yes
Q Are you the only spirit here at this time
A Yes
Q Do you have a message?
A Yes for Lyndsey
Glass moved to the following letter
DAECEB
The spirit related to being German and was 78 years of age when he died. He was a monk here and new that Lyndsey worked here, he liked Lyndsey she reminded him of a friend before he became a monk. He was in his fifties when he became a monk as he had found religion. Jacqi has a headache but it was not the spirit causing it. Spirit says we are joined by another spirit a female and Lyndsey reminds him of the female spirit. Glass then moved and spelt BFDLP a sound is heard by the door and spirit confirms that it was him that made the sound.
The glass then spelt DOBM.
The glass moved to Emma spirit confirmed the name of Zachariah and established he was a doctor. A series of questions were asked to spirit and confirmed the year of Emma’s birth and that the female spirit was at her birth the glass again moved and spelt DOBM and spirit confirmed that this was an abbreviation. But of what we do not know. All team can hear sounds like furniture moving. At the end of this vigil we asked the team if they had been moving furniture as they were in the top of the Domus but confirmed that nothing had been moved at all.
We then asked the spirit if they were happy here and the glass moved to yes. We believe a Doctor came through who said they had a message for Lindsay and Emma but the message was garbled and in the end we closed the séance While we were in the domus we heard what we thought was another group scraping chairs around upstairs but when asked they said that it was not them!!
Vigil 2 The Domus
EMF 0 Temperature Reading 16.0 degrees
The atmosphere in the Domus was completely different to the lower part. Emma, Simon and Jim went up into the top most point of the Domus but found it all very quiet. We took turns in inviting spirit to join with us but had no response at all. Simon suggested we took separate places to sit around the Domus but all of us agreed that we felt completely alone here. As we all left the far end stage Lyndsey and Emma had the perfume of flowers come by which were quite strong, just as though the flowers were under their noses.
No other occurrences here.
Vigil 3 The Ruins
We all walked amongst the ruins of the Abbey and it felt quite eerie, all very quiet except for the sounds of some night creatures. Despite us trying to communicate with spirit nothing came through to us on this vigil.
Team 3
Vigil 1 The Ruins
EMF 0 Temperature 8.5 degrees
The group walked to the old staircase, after calling out to invite spirit to communicate with us some slight sounds were heard in the distance towards the alter. All move to that area where Becky continued to call out. All hear noises from bushes but it could be leaves falling or animals. Ken moves closer to the bushes and feels a very tight chest. Ken saw a gate and a path, he went to walk through it but felt like he could not walk along and backed off, the pain in chest is getting tighter. Sarah later tells us that this path leads to the infirmary.
Group move on the court yard (cloisters). Ken asks if we were followed and feels there is someone in an arch near the steps; Ken felt this is a boy around 12-14 years old. Becky sat next to where Ken saw the boy and tried to talk to him. Ken says the boy doesn’t want women here, Ken feels the boy is either lost or frightened; he won’t look up at anyone. Ken describes what the boy is wearing as a white sheet with a rope around the middle; Sarah confirms this would be accurate.
As the group walks past the Magnolia tree Sarah, Ken and Becky feel a chill (temperature at the tree is actually 1 degree warmer than the court yard.
Mandy senses people walking around but never going on the grass.
Ken now sees boy again at other side of court yard in an arch. Sarah says by the description he sounds like a novice and the part we are in is for the lay brothers, the boy shouldn’t be in there.
All move on to near the church entrance, Ken feels very uneasy and like we are unwelcome. The team forms a circle and hopes to diffuse the situation by calling to spirit and conveying our intentions meaning no harm to any them. Ken doesn’t feel any better and the team move away from area and go back to the infirmary. Again Ken feels unwelcome and leaves the infirmary chapel. All girls go into the area and feel fine. The girls formed a circle Sarah is getting warmer and warmer and feels herself blushing, and Becky felt blood rushing in her ears. No other occurrences here.
Vigil 2 Lower Domus
EMF Reading 0 Temperature Reading 12.2
The team all walk to the end room. Becky calls for spirit to join us and a foot shuffling is heard. All hear movement from above; we tried to contact the other team by walkie talkie but could not get through to them. We Continued calling out to spirit and a knock is heard from the middle of the room. Ken saw a dark shadow go across the door way. There is an icy feel above the Ouija board, you can actually put your hand in and out of it like a tunnel of cold and the glass on the board is extremely cold to touch. The team held a glass divination séance and Becky asks for communication, and two knocks are heard. Becky asks for two knocks again, 2 knocks heard. Becky feeling cold down her right side. All move away from board and leave a £1 coin on its side on the glass. Mandy feels freezing like water has been poured down her back. Becky asks for Mandy to be left alone, it eases off a little then came back. All hear a drip, floor and ceiling checked, no water marks found. Ken feels drawn to the middle room. Mandy still feels freezing. Becki assed spirit to stop affecting Mandy and eventually Mandy feels the cold lifting, all feel a little warmer. Becky asks for the sprit to use another way to communicate without affecting someone but using sigh, sound or smell. Ken suddenly goes rigid, holding hands very tightly leaning forward. Ken is asked if he is ok and repeatedly says he is fine. Becky asks the sprit to stop affecting Ken; eventually Ken returns to normal not quite sure what had happened.
While talking about this Sarah saw a person walk past the window, Sarah went straight to the window to see who is, Becky and Ken also go to look. No one can be seen, the group in the grounds can be seen in the far corner, nowhere near the window. Sarah said it was so real she didn’t even think it could be a ghost but describe it as a person walking holding a glass lamp with a candle with both hands. There were no other people in the grounds when this was seen.
Vigil 3 Upper Domus
EMF Reading 0 Temperature Reading 16.9
In the Domus the team takes seats and adjusts to room, Becky walks around, and smells flowers, and these then disappear. Mandy feels like she doesn’t want to move and could happily stay where she is, all go up onto stage. Group tries communication on the Ouija board and then glass divination and then table tipping. Nothing seems to come through. All the team makes their way upstairs to a small room that led off of the stage attempts to communicate were made but to no avail. All team go back to the stage, Mandy and Steen remain on the stage, Ken, Sarah and Becky go to small room on left of stage. Ken feels like this is a chapel of rest and senses death. Sarah confirms funerals are held here. Ken tries to communicate looking into the mirror that was there but no communication was made. All feel warm and calm and even feel they could sleep here. As the group walks down the stairs from the stage a gush of air is felt followed by the beautiful smell of a fresh bouquet of flowers. The smell is very strong and all team could smell it. Moving around the room the smell came and went. No further communication was made.

I was so excited to be invited to Beaulieu Abbey as this investigation was for the charity Help for Heroes and we had a lot of sponsors making sure that we would complete the night. We were warmly greeted by our hosts Sarah and Lyndsey who accompanied us all night, Thank you girls. I had mixed emotions on this investigation, sadness yet a feeling of honor. My imagination could see what it must have been like here all those years ago, a place of prayer and peace. The herb garden was beautiful every herb you could think of was here and the aroma quite outstanding. Walking through the ruins I felt as though I had one to many and could not keep to the pathway. I saw a figure walking across the grass in the cloisters I thought it was one of the male members of my team, but then realized they were standing behind me. All the time I had the feeling we were not alone and to hear the chanting was extraordinary. Many thanks to Margaret, Lyndsey and \Sarah and my grateful thanks to Lord Montagu for allowing us to investigate part of the Beaulieu Estate. I would love to bring the group back here again for further investigation.
Ken
On arrival I set up the infra red cameras in different parts of the domus that were connected to DVD recorders. I had visited Beaulieu before but never by night and it all looked so very different, gone were the visitors and we were all alone. All was very peaceful and quiet. I did feel that we were being watched and that we were followed by curious spirits wondering what we are doing at their domain. I felt sick and drunk in parts of the ruins which disappeared as soon as I left the area. I thoughraly enjoyed this investigation and would like to thank all persons involved at Beaulieu for making us so welcome and for allowing MPI the opportunity to investigate to help raise money for the much needed Charity Help for Heroes.
Becky
First I would like to say thank you so much to Lord Montagu for allowing us to hold the investigation here, also thank you to Sarah and Lindsey who were wonderful hosts and lovely company for the evening. This was such an exciting night knowing we were doing this investigation for the Charity for Help for Heroes.
I had a fantastic evening and things were noticeable from the beginning. While walking around I was upstairs in the Domus and kept smelling the most wonderful flowers, they would disappear and then come back in a different spot.
During setting up, while outside I heard someone say hello, I looked around and there was no one behind me. For the majority of the evening I generally felt safe and warm and had no concerns. I would have liked to have seen or felt more but you can’t chose what happens. It was a beautiful location. I had a fantastic group and feel the evening went really well. Once again thank you Sarah and Lindsey for giving up your time to come with us.
Jacqi
I was very excited going to Beaulieu Abbey and when we arrived it promised to be a good night.
We had a walk around with Sarah and Lindsay who had very kindly volunteered to stay with us all night. Their knowledge of the history of the Abbey and surrounding area was brilliant. When we went into the upstairs domus I walked through a very cold patch on the stage and there was an overpowering smell of flowers. Upon investigation there were a few dead flowers in a vase at the other end of the hall behind some curtains with no smell coming from them
A very enjoyable night but not as much activity as I would have liked but we raised a lot of money for Help for Heroes Charity and this was our aim a big thank you to Lyndsey and Sarah for being our guides all night and having to work the next morning. Also a big thank you to Lord Montagu who allowed us into the Abbey for the night.
Adrian
UPSTAIRS DOMUS - I had a several feelings in this room. Early on in the investigation I felt some hot spots on the stage area as did some other members of the team, there was also a very strong smell of flowers in different areas of the room, some glass divination was attempted but was unable to make any sense from it, I became aware of some movement on the stage area but cannot say for sure what it was.
OUTSIDE AREAS - I did not feel too much outside except when I got to the infirmary area, I became very dizzy and nearly fell over; other group members had similar feelings.
DOWNSTAIRS DOMUS - I had no feelings in here and all was very quiet, glass divination was tried and again was unable to make any sense from it.
I would like to say thank you to Lord Montagu for allowing us to conduct our investigation and thank you to the staff who accompanied us with their big smiles, historical knowledge and enthusiasm; it made the investigation a much better experience.
I would love the opportunity to return to Beaulieu Abbey and do some further investigations.
Pat
Well for me from start to finish was a brilliant night, from seeing the bus all done up with balloons, red white and blue streamers, and our Help For Heroes posters was a great start, it certainly turned a few heads,
On entering the Abbey we were met by the staff who made us feel very welcome straight away, and showed us around the Abbey and grounds to which we were going to investigate.
On entering the Domus the smell of flowers was quiet strong in the middle of the hall, but on looking round there were no flowers to be seen, at the end of the hall going up the stairs to a stage, I felt hot air being blown into my face on several occasions, this was then followed by a very cold spot which seemed to move to different parts of the stage, on going up to the attic I found that room quiet hard to breath in, but at all times never really felt uncomfortable
On the investigation outside in the grounds that was quiet eerie it was pitch black and some unusual sounds heard, in one part of the ground that use to be the infirmary the sensation of being light headed all of the time in that area it felt as though my legs weren't mine if I hadn't known better I would say id had far too much to drink, just couldn't walk straight at all, and even standing still, just couldn't stop swaying, so just felt I needed to keep walking about, that was a very strange area to be in,
The cloisters I found very peaceful, and at one point looking through the door of the church, it seemed to have what looked like somebody sitting reading in there I believe that was seen by a few of us.
On the third part of our investigation although we had a fairly good response from glass divination board, upstairs and down it didn't seem to make too much sense but as I sat on one of the long benches one of my team members Adrian seemed to me as though his face had changed and it wasn't his, that I found really quiet strange,
But to sum it all up a great night, a lovely place, and a big thank you to the staff for making us feel welcome, and helping us to achieve our goal by raising much needed money to the Charity Help for Heroes.
Simon
After the long wait to get to this investigation, I found the abbey to be as good as I had hoped it to be. Although our team didn't really have much evidence to report, I'd still go back for more. In the first vigil we held a séance with some taps and information on a team member coming out. Not much else happened for me but a fantastic location all the same
Steen
Beaulieu Abbey is a very beautiful place and I felt very ‘comfortable’ all night. In the Domus I felt the presence of a short entity I thought may be a child but wasn’t clear. I also had the urge to walk straight across the middle of the grass quadrangle, and when I saw the model of the building (how it used to be) there was a path straight across the middle.
Mark
What a fantastic place! I couldn't wait to get started. I’d had already seen a figure walk from the entrance of the Abbey down towards the large oak trees, so I thought this could be an interesting night. Also on the initial walk around I saw three figures following us around out of curiosity and also noticed them at the one of the arch entrances to the cloisters.
We split into our teams after the equipment was set up; in my team were Val, Pat, Adrian and Gary.
Our first vigil was situated upstairs in the Domus, nothing came to mind straightaway but we decided to enter up to the small attic above the stage area. I felt and saw a presence of a small old man about 5ft in height, and I don't think he was not happy for us to be up there although he was no way threatening. We then did an Ouija session on the stage and had a male entity with us which were proved to be the case as we started our session. We got what we thought a male spelling his name although this was not too clear, we believed that he was trying to spell "Brother..." but the rest of the letters we couldn't really decipher only that he was 49 years old. I also noticed that there were at least five entities in the room with us, but were not communicating with the team. I also felt that the beams had some significance, I got the feeling that someone had either died through suicide or an accident from falling or hanging. The only other feeling was that they didn't appreciate the fact that we were using the Ouija board as it seemed as it was the devils work. We ended that particular vigil as nothing further happened.
Our next vigil was situated outside in the cloisters and the remains of the cathedral. It was a beautiful night out perfect for an investigation; we started off at the entrance of what remained of the cathedral. At first, for me, nothing really happened initially but we walked towards one of the altars situated near the tree line, as we approached i heard a noise in the bushes but this may have been a bird or small animal. But Adrian stated something was thrown at him as he investigated that particular spot, but nothing else further happened there. It became eerie out there as night fell and a gentle mist feel upon the grounds. We then proceeded to the cloisters area, as we walked through the arch again i felt that we were being watched. We continued to walk through and off through the other arch towards the remains of the kitchen and infirmary areas as we walked through each one of us felt as if we were tipsy and light headed, Gary had to sit for a few minutes and recover, as we walked out of that space we all began to feel better, that was very strange but impressive. I did notice multiple entities in the grounds but I think they were residual also they were busy gardening or reading, quite pleasant really nothing negative. We continued back and followed our footsteps back through to the Cloisters and worked our way clockwise around the edge. I noticed through the first archway we had walked through a figure in the grounds crouching down then standing up, he quickly disappeared and he was dressed as a monk. A bit later we came across a church that was locked up and I peeked through the glass doors, and immediately noticed a figure in there, either praying or reading. I asked the other members of the team to take a look and Gary caught on camera what looked like a figure either reading or praying with candlelight. We continued our vigil in the Cloisters but nothing else happened so we ended the vigil.
Our next vigil was on the ground floor of the Domus which was situated at the end of the exhibition area into what looked like a kitchen or small chapel. We started off the vigil but nothing really happened. We started the Ouija board again and began to get some results, again the word "Brother..." was spelt but not in English, but the surname we could not decipher. We couldn't obtain the age but the year was given as 1256. Gary made a valid point in that the spirit who was with us may have not spoken modern English or was speaking Latin. We closed the board and vigil and returned to the hub.
Our final vigil was a group vigil upstairs in which we formed a circle. I noticed that we were joined by a total of 12 spirits just hanging back in the perimeter of the circle. I also heard prayers being whispered, but I got the impression that they didn't want to communicate with us and I also got the impression that they didn't approve of what we were doing as it looked to them as if it was something demonic we were doing. I decided to end the vigil as I thought nothing else would happen.
All in all a great place and a great place to investigate, I’d love to return for the sequel. A big thank-you to our hosts for the night also.
Emma
Had a fantastic evening at Beaulieu Abbey, we had most activity on the ground floor. Lots of movement on the communication board, lots of bangs some of which could be explained, others could not be. We communicated with a male spirit first and then apparently a Dr who was present at my birth, very odd but it did know the year of my birth which was strange as no-one in the group knew.
We did not get very much activity in the other areas but still had a fascinating time exploring this huge area.
Thanks to the hosts who decided to join us for the evening.
Mandy
I participated in Three Vigils during the night, the first vigil was the outside area, which I found interesting but during the vigil didn’t experience anything.
The second vigil was the downstairs area, a Ouija board was already set up, I participated in that but we didn’t get any movement, I called out and I felt very cold all down my back and a certain area down both arms, as like I was being hugged, this happened although the vigil and I did ask that I be left alone and it did go but the feeling kept returning, the feeling stayed with me until half way through the break.
The third vigil was in the upstairs room; again we tried the Ouija board but got no movement, although again this area was interesting I felt nothing.
I participated in a group Séance at the end of the evening, and felt a little wobbly and swaying on my feet, but that soon passed.
I really enjoyed this investigation and would like to do it again in the future.
Gary
To be honest, Beaulieu Abbey wasn't how I'd imaged it... but that didn't ruin the evening. Although, I didn't see anything or catch anything on camera, I did experience an of uneasiness whilst in the Infirmary. I felt very unwell and had to sit down for a few minutes. I felt as though I was going to be sick, very dizzy and disorientated and that i was burning up in a fever... however when I left the area, I was fine, pretty much instantly. It was an interesting evening, with lots of challenges and experiences that all required rational explanations. It was also for a fantastic charity, Help for Heroes, a charity that is very close to home for me. It was a privilege to investigate a great place and for a fantastic charity and wish to thank everyone who sponsored the group and help make the evening a success.
